Plotted above is the data from Monthly Submissions with two physics events and two more general events marked. The physics events had no effect on the submissions, but the other two global-scale events did.
The exponential nature of the data can be confirmed by using a log scale on the Y-axis. The local peaks and minimuma are probably semester patterns during a year. People might finish more manuscripts outside their coursework duties.
